'Thick & blue, tried & true'

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife advises that before stepping on a frozen waterbody the first thing you should do is check the color and thickness of the ice. Knowing how to read ice color is a useful indicator of ice health -- though color alone does not guarantee “safe” ice. The Maine Game Warden Service offers this 2-minute video on ice safety along with these helpful tips.
