About The Event

Playwright Tom Klingenstein will host a reading of his new play “American Queen” at 7 Lakes Alliance, 137 Main St. in the Belgrade Lakes village, at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. The public is invited. There is no admission fee.

The play is set in 1862 in the middle of Abraham Lincoln's first term. The Civil War is going badly for the North.  Without a few significant victories, it is unlikely Lincoln will win the Republican nomination in 1864. Lurking in the shadows is Lincoln's ambitious Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon Chase, who is angling for the nomination. Based in broad brush strokes on the historical record, “American Queen” is centered on the political and romantic intrigue surrounding the contest for the nomination.
