Paddle on Great Meadow Stream

Join Maine Master Naturalist Liz Koucky for a fascinating paddle through Great Meadow Stream. We will start at the bridge on Route 225 in Rome and follow the slow-moving, curving stream through a variety of natural landscape communities. Starting in a forested wetland, we’ll pass into open, marshy wetland, through a bog and then out into North Bay of Great Pond. Spring greens of emergent aquatic plants will line the shore and some bog-dwelling trees and shrubs will be in bloom. We’ll be on the lookout for returning and migrating birds including loons, canada geese, and sandhill cranes. If we're lucky, we might hear the unique sounds of the elusive American bittern.

Great Meadow Stream has been listed as an infested waterbody since the discovery of invasive variable-leaf milfoil in 2010. This area is still under management, thus, our Invasives Aquatics Director, Sharon Mann, will be there to ensure proper Clean, Drain, Dry protocols are followed and answer questions about 7 Lakes Alliance’s remediation efforts.

Bring your own paddlecraft, personal flotation device (PFD), and drinking water. Limited paddlecraft and PFDs are available upon request.

*The location of this event may change due to Great Meadow Stream being an active invasive aquatic species site. Registrants will receive detailed parking instructions and agenda for the paddle prior to the event.
